Doctor Who Poll - Evilly Stolen ;-)

Why do people never refer to Doctor Who as a superhero?

Duh, because he isn't.
He is above that sort of tacky moniker.
He isn't because...(please explain in comments)
Who ever said he wasn't?!

I don't consider him a superhero because he doesn't have an alter-ego, he doesn't really "hide" his identity and he doesn't really have...super powers (though Batman doesn't either). At least in the new DW series, he just uses his brain (and good technology -- though by that definition, James Bond would be a super hero :p ) to get out of sticky situations.

And the whole "seeing all of time and space" thing? It...doesn't seem like that's ever really helped him...solve any problem. It's just...something he can see/do. ;p I mean, it helps him figure out what NOT to do, but...I don't know, I don't really consider that "super." ;p

Interesting reply. The only ability that I can see making the Doctor a superhero is telepathy, which in the classic series and the Big Finish audios got him out of a few jams. But the issue doesn't seem to have been explored much in the new DW series at all. Shame actually, because I liked that side of him :-)

He sort of did have an alter ego for a while as well. The third Doctor worked as a scientific advisor for UNIT on Earth while he was exiled there. Honestly can't see the new-series-Doctor having this kind of day job though ;-)
